Architects’ Vision

Our concept for Bankside delivers a tall, slender residential tower with a glazed façade, paired with a solid, highly detailed brick podium. This bold architectural expression integrates seamlessly with the wider Masterplan, shaping a progressive new urban environment. A continuous sequence of four-storey, vertically stacked layers with recessed banding and an irregular grid reinterprets traditional floor layering—imbuing the tower with identity and character. The podium draws from the historic Collier Street Baths, with vertical openings and deep setbacks, stepping down to frame the landmark. At street level, terraces and commercial space activate the public realm and support Collier Square.

“My love affair with Manchester began with The Smiths, peaked when I married my Mancunian husband, and continues through my design work in the city. In that time, I’ve watched Manchester evolve from a cauldron of creativity into a confident international destination.

Designing the interiors for Bankside, in collaboration with Project Studio, has been a chance to honour the authentic soul of the area. Inspired by the many workshops that once filled the neighbourhood, we’ve used materials like bridle leather, metalwork, and mercerised cottons, whilst the rich tiling of the nearby Grade II* listed Collier Street Baths is echoed in our use of jewel-coloured handmade ceramics.”
